In Contra, the main character wields an endless rifle. It can fire in eight directions while moving or jumping. A single hit means instant death, losing the weapon. The game has over 8 areas with two types of stages. One is the standard side view.
The other is a 3D maze stage. In these stages, you move towards the background to progress. These mazes are inside enemy bases. A map and time limit are on the upper screen. After each maze, there’s a 3D fixed stage at the core of the base.
