WhatsApp Adds New Storage Feature to Manage Chat Space

WhatsApp Adds New Storage

If you’ve ever struggled with your phone storage filling up thanks to endless photos, videos, and documents in WhatsApp, you’re in luck. WhatsApp is rolling out a new storage feature that gives you much finer control over space, one chat at a time.

What’s changing

At the moment, WhatsApp allows you to manually get to its main settings and perform a cleaning up of the stored files that are taking up a lot of space through the “Manage Storage” tool. The biggest difference of the forthcoming update is that not only will there be a storage management tool in WhatsApp, but each individual chat will have their own tool. That means you can go into a specific conversation (with a friend or a group) and manage all the media inside just that chat — without digging through the entire app.

Inside the chat info screen, you’ll see a grid of everything shared: photos, videos, and documents. Then you can sort by “Newest”, “Oldest”, or “Largest” to find the big files fast. You’ll also be able to select multiple items and delete them in bulk — or mark certain ones as “starred” so you don’t accidentally delete them.

Why does this matter?

This feature is a real boost for anyone whose WhatsApp gets clogged with group-chat media or old conversations that hog space. With this new storage feature, you don’t have to clear out all chats just to free up some room – you can target just the trouble conversations. And that’s smarter storage management right there.

Also, if you’re on a phone with limited space or constantly juggling media from chats, this update gives you more transparency and control. Instead of guessing what’s taking up space, you’ll see it inside the chat and decide what to keep or delete.

What‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ is the status?

That’s right. It is undergoing beta testing at the moment. A source mentioned that the iOS version 25.31.10.70 via TestFlight is the one that has the feature. Some Android users are getting the feature slowly, too. Most probably, WhatsApp is monitoring the performance.

A few things to consider

  • As this is a beta feature, you may run into bugs, and you may also not be able to use the feature at times.
  • Gigantic files will stay with you as long as they are scattered in different chats, notwithstanding the newly included chat-level clean-up, so it’s good for a targeted clean-up, but doesn’t replace general storage management.
  • The moment you see the option in a chat’s info screen, you will realize that you have access to the WhatsApp new storage feature and can start using smarter WhatsApp storage management right away.

Bottom line:

WhatsApp’s next update will include a better storage management option, where you will be able to do it one chat at a time. If you are rarely out of space due to media from chats, then this function will probably make a great ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌difference.
