T-Mobile Unlocks Starlink Satellite Texting for Everyone

T-Mobile announced satellite-to-phone service this month. It will use SpaceX’s Starlink network. Go5G Next plan users will get this for free starting in July. On other plans, it will cost $15 per month per line. AT&T and Verizon users can also get it for $20 per month per line.

They just need an unlocked smartphone with eSIM support. A second SIM will be added to the phone to enable Starlink service. This lets users receive satellite-based messages in areas without regular cell signals. T-Mobile will publish a list of supported phones online. It will work on most smartphones from the last four years, including Galaxy S21 and iPhone 14 models or newer.

Last month, T-Mobile invited some users to test satellite connectivity. This included owners of newer iPhones, Samsung Galaxy, and Pixel devices. Now, the free beta program is expanding. The Super Bowl ad confirmed it’s open to anyone on any wireless carrier. This offer lasts until July. For now, satellite service only supports SMS text messages in dead zones. SpaceX plans to add voice calls and data in the future, pending regulatory approvals.

Experience Starlink Satellite Texting with T-Mobile

In July, business users on Go 5G Business Next will get Starlink for free. First responder agencies on T-Priority plans and select premium plans will also benefit. Including rival carriers is a bold move. AT&T and Verizon are working on their own satellite services. AT&T partners with AST SpaceMobile, while Verizon works with Skylo.

However, AST SpaceMobile is still months away from launching mainstream satellite services. SpaceX received FCC approval in November to operate the service commercially. The license lets SpaceX use T-Mobile’s 1900MHz spectrum to connect certified devices.

T-Mobile customers with iPhones and Galaxy devices have already tested the cellular Starlink beta. They were able to send SMS texts in remote areas of the US. However, the signal quality wasn’t always reliable. “It drops signal quite often,” users reported.

Still, they receive a notification when connected. SpaceX is working on launching hundreds of new Starlink satellites to improve signal quality. The service costs $15 and $20 per month for T-Mobile users. Some find it expensive unless they often travel through dead zones.
