The GoPro has been the industry standard for at least many years now. As usual, we’ll cover what we like about the GoPro Hero 10 Black, then what we don’t like. And should you buy this action camera? The main changes from the previous Hero 9?

  1. A significantly faster processor.
  2. Improved horizon leveling.
  3. Much better touch screen.
  4. No lag in the menus.
  5. The lens coating repels water.
  6. It is a fraction lighter.
  7. Better low light performance.

What’s new in the GoPro Hero 10 Black?

Right here it’s in you can see the Hero 9 and GoPro Hero10 don’t differ much in terms of looks. The GoPro hero 10 Black just has a blue logo instead of a muted gray one. Inside, you’ll find the Ten’s new GP2 processor, which allows it to shoot at higher frame rates than the previous model. It also has a slightly higher megapixel count for photos, the stabilization tech called hyper smooth upgrades, to version 4.0 which is a bit of an improvement over the 9. And the low light performance has improved as well.

If you’re using 4k resolution, then 120 frames per second are brilliant for slow motion. The horizon leveling now works up to 45-degree angles, instead of 27 degrees on the previous model. The touchscreen and menu system works much better than the Hero 9, a real bonus when you stop driving briefly to change settings.

What are the GoPro Hero 10 Black features we like?

GoPro got the stabilization right. They claim it has improved, but last year’s model was so good that we don’t have different than the horizon leveling can choose. It works brilliantly whether you’re driving over rough terrain, or walking around filming the action.

GoPro has a Superview setting, a great feature for riders. The camera digitally manipulates the footage to increase vertical coverage. This means you see the horizon and handles, and the positioning of the camera is not so critical.

See the difference with the standard wide view?

It’s much less immersive if you rarely see the handles. There are almost no bugs or issues with the Hero10. In the past, GoPro has often been accused of releasing cameras too early. Buyers encountered several issues and had to wait for updates to fix them.

The good news? It seems the only real issue with the GoPro 10 was overheating and an update is quickly released to fix the problem. The sound was very good on recent models. The wind reduction function works quite well. You can record all narrations with GoPro 10. Adjusting the EQ in post-production always produces good results.

GoPro Hero10 Video quality?

This is the industry standard, at least for action cameras. I usually use GoPro’s Protune setting. This provides a high-quality file that can then be adjusted in post-production. You can usually add sharpness, and saturation and adjust the color curves.

However, like any action camera, the GoPro is limited by its small sensor. The quality can drop quickly in low light conditions, or when you have a lot of contrast with the sun and shadows in the forest. The range of mounting options for the GoPro is vast. It’s easy to remove and hold in your hand even when you’re riding even in the mountains hills.

GoPro Hero10 versus 9

There is one major physical difference between the two, and that’s the removable lens cover. It’s normally easier than that. The GoPro Hero10 is more hydrophobic and scratch resistant than the Hero 9, meaning it’s less likely to get obscured by water droplets and less likely to get those nasty water stains when it dries. Pretty cool. So those are all the major differences.

What is this like to use?

I would say it’s amazing actually. There are just a bunch of little minor things that all add up to make this a really fun and easy shooting experience.

The front screen, while narrow, is good enough to frame your shot If you’re filming yourself, it’s fully waterproof right out of the box.

The back screen is bright and big enough that you can handily control it without an App. If you do use the App, it’s pretty good now. It’s straightforward to connect to your phone and the live preview is only about a second behind that.

GoPro Quick Capture

All of the settings you need can be found in the App as well, so you can remotely control your camera as if it was in your hand. Also if you have the setting called Quick Capture on, you’re able to press record even if the camera’s off and it just automatically turns on and starts rolling, that is very useful.

This was a huge lifesaver while someone shooting in cars because all you need to do was press a single button and start capturing the footage. If the camera’s far away, you can also turn it on through the App. The overall image is good if a little indistinguishable from the Hero 9. The thing that I’m more impressed with is actually how much agency pros give you when you’re shooting.

If you’re a pro, you’ve got options to shoot at high bitrates and dial in all your settings. Just like any other pro camera.

But if you’re a newbie or just want to smash a record button, the GoPro does a decent job in other settings as well. It’s not often that you look at the images this makes and be blown away, though.

GoPro hero 10 Black for Vlogging

GoPros are good at being places other cameras can’t be sturdy, but the images coming out of them are rarely visually stunning. Plus, if you’re just capturing everyday life such as social media, Vlogging, or getting landscapes, a lot of decent phones can do this just as well, if not better.

GoPro Hero 10 Black for Photography

Although GoPros are primarily known for video, they can also snap still photos. All GoPro cameras can shoot JPG still photographs. Some of the most recent models are also capable of shooting RAW.

The photo captures are also pretty decent, but does anyone use these for photography that much? The only time you consider GoPro to be the stills camera is if you are going underwater and didn’t have dedicated underwater housing for an SLR. If you were going somewhere where the elements were so harsh that this is probably the only thing that would survive. All of this stuff adds up to a seamless and easy user experience. It just lets you use the camera with as little friction as possible.

GoPro Hero 10 Black Battery Compatibility

The GoPro HERO 10 Black comes with two official batteries:

  1. The standard or regular battery (model number ADBAT-001)
  2. The Enduro battery (model number ADBAT-011-WS).

GoPros have tiny batteries. It’s a given. This lasts about an hour of recording in most circumstances, which is pretty impressive given the size of the battery. But if you want to roll with this something a bit longer, such as for a time-lapse, you need to plug it into mains or a battery bank for USB C. The only way to do that is by lifting the entire side of the camera open, exposing everything the elements all at once. Because the battery doesn’t have a locking mechanism, likely, it could just fall out the side.

There are, of course, accessories you can purchase to fix this design flaw and pretty much every other one and that’s this is kind of a little bit useless on its own. Now it does come with a few stick-on mounts and cases, but these stickers can only amount to flat surfaces and you want to be happy sticking adhesives to that surface.

Honestly, some of the stuff you can buy, like a case with the cold shoe mounts and tripod mounts, is all slim enough. You feel like it could be included on the camera body itself with no worries. They have always used the same two-prong mounts, and have had those integrated into the camera itself since the Hero 8, which means at least if you’ve owned a GoPro before, you’ll still likely be able to use all your stuff. That does take the pressure off buying a bunch of new accessories a little bit.

So who is the GoPro Hero10 Black for?

There is no doubt that the GoPro Hero10 Black is the peak of what GoPro has been trying to achieve over the last 15 years or so. It is the most iterated action camera on the market right now, and you can tell how much thought has gone into it. While there are a few little things that still bug you about the GoPro. You can fix most of those problems with accessories long as you have the cash. Honestly, it feels like most of you will be fine using a mobile phone to shoot.

If you’re a filmmaker and want to shoot your extreme exploits, even if you’re a business that just needs an easy-to-mount camera, this will be a handy little tool. Weirdly the GoPro Hero10 and Hero 9 both cost the same right now. Thanks to a special deal, GoPro is running in a lot of regions. The catch is they sign you up for their subscription service for a year, but protip you can just cancel it before the next bill rolls around.
