How IMAX projectors are created | Working of IMAX

IMAX projectors & Working

IMAX projectors: The IMAX system has a 1570 format which is the largest motion picture format in the world. It was invented over a century ago & the concept is the same today. The film revolves in front of a light which projects an image onto a screen. But today’s latest technological advancements make the projector a real showpiece.

The IMAX projector film is 10 times larger than normal & the projector magnifies it 400 times. As it moves in a sideways rolling loop rather than the traditional vertical feel. Instead of the usual sprockets, the registration pins retract as the film loads & then reach out to steady it as it rolls.

A vacuum sucks the film to the aperture lens. This is how they keep the gigantic image perfectly steady. To create an IMAX projector the worker bolts 2 prisons together & mount them on a part known as the lower illumination module.

The prisons & a mirror reflect the light of the projector to a similar part called the upper illumination module which will then relay the light to the lens. As it’s a fly’s eye lenses, a collection of many lenses on one glass. Each will focus on a single point, ensuring an even distribution of light.

A technician then screws 2 fly’s eye lenses together & then places them in a fixture to align the 2 halves. Then he switches on the light & places the alignment guide over the lenses. There are red & green filters on this guide & he brings them into focus.

The technician then adjusts them until the red & green lines merge. It only means that the 2 fly’s eye lenses are now aligned. Then the technician installs the upper illumination module in the projector frame & then he flips it. He then removes the protective cap from the back. Then they attach it to the lower illumination module which was assembled earlier.

Then he bolts together with the rotor support & motor. The rotor is the big wheel that is the heart of the projector. As it drives the film forward in that distinctive wave-like action.

A piece called a stator will act as a guide for the film. The technician then fits the aperture block on the front of the frame. By using a crane the technicians lower it onto the base.

Then they screw in the spacer bar & install the second projector assembly. These assemblies will enable the system to run 3-dimensional movies. It’s time to position the main lens at the front of the projector. The technicians remove the lens caps & it’s ready to roll. Moreover, the film wave happens 24 times a second. The film of a test chart ripple in front of the aperture & then vacuums pull it down for 24th of a second. This will eliminate any shakiness in the projected image. The lamps that IMAX projector uses very powerful light very efficiently. Then finally you get the picture to enjoy the show.

Great Article ! I’d like to convert the two 4-ft single linear T-12 fixtures in my kitchen to LED lights. These are 40W bulbs but I’ve measured 45+ watts probably due to inefficient ballasts.
