Apple may be one step away from effectively blurring the border between smartphone and professional photography. In fact, rumors point to the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max to come with a set of DSLR-like camera controls, among which is a variable aperture system on the primary 48-megapixel lens.

A new era for iPhone cameras

The sneak peeks of upcoming functionalities reveal that in the near future, users will be able to regulate the amount of light going through the camera lens – a technique photographers have been using for ages to create shallow depth effects or to light balance bright scenes. Photographers using DSLR and mirrorless cameras have this feature at their disposal, and now, it seems, they are ready to hand the same creative control to iPhone users.

It was the Digital Chat Station that gave the tip that both the wide and telephoto lenses will be the ones getting the improvement. If that’s the truth, Apple will have made its first step towards offering hardware-based manual control instead of pure computational photography.

Why it matters

The Pro models from Apple are presently equipped with a fixed aperture, which hampers how light is managed in different situations. The variable system, on the other hand, guarantees better low-light pictures, a more realistic background blur, and sharper shots under the sun without any third-party apps or camera add-ons.

Such a move is a testament to Apple’s growing reliance on combining not only powerful sensors but also smarter image processing to achieve its goals. For instance, content creators, vloggers, and mobile photographers will find the iPhone 18 Pro series as a camera-like device, just that it’s a bit closer than ever.

Expected launch

The iPhone 18 Pro series is expected in September 2026. Still, Apple has not confirmed the new feature yet. The speculation of DLSR-grade control on an iPhone has already ruffled feathers in the tech community. In case Apple pulls it off, the iPhone 18 Pro may be the one that sets the mobile photography standards all over ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌again.
